Exhibition and book launch of Canberra Net Zero

On Friday 21 May at the University of Canberra there is an exhibition and book launch of Canberra Net Zero: a research project by students of UC’s Masters of Architecture.

The research project involved researching topics related to the ACT’s 2045 Net Zero ambitions.  The topics span neighborhood and building design, food production and transport. The students have been challenged to consider how their spatial thinking and unique disciplinary skillsets - drawing, modelling, fabricating and film making – might contribute new modes of engagement with the residents of Canberra and in doing so, raise awareness of the questions their research uncovered.

DESIGN Canberra: The Least House Necessary workshop

The Light House architecture and science team are very excited to be collaborating with inspirational Queensland architects and engagement specialists POD (People Oriented Design) to present POD’s trademarked innovative and educational workshop about sustainable housing design: The Least House Necessary.

The Nov 11 workshop has been tailored to suit conditions and precedents in the ACT and cool temperature climates and will take place at the ACT Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects in Red Hill as part of DESIGN Canberra.

The Least House Necessary (TLHN) design workshop was first developed by POD in 2011 and has been presented to over 500 participants in regional Queensland and Brisbane. It provides a historical perspective on housing design in Australia, including ethnoarchitecture and challenges participants about the principles of sustainable housing design, their daily behaviour patterns and how to better connect with our natural environment.

The workshop is perfect for new home buyers, home owners considering renovations, STEM teachers, architects, engineers, town planners, sustainability and environmental designers and students.

Sustainable House Day open homes

Sustainable House Day gives people a chance to visit houses that have been designed, built or renovated with sustainability in mind, as well as the opportunity to talk to owners and receive loads of great tips and ideas.

This year, Light House director and scientist, Jenny, was going to open her new and exciting, smaller and smarter, 8.2 star home to the public - but she's decided she needs a rest after hosting several very well-attended open homes over the last few months and with DESIGN Canberra coming up!

The good news is there are some other great homes around Canberra that will be open - one of our designs (CasaJarrah in O'Connor) and also the personal project/home of one of the terrific builders we regularly work with - Luke Dickerson of Bespoke Building Services. You can read and see more about Luke's house here.

To find out more about the event and to keep posted on all of the great homes that will be open on the day, register here.
