Light House Gardens

There is nothing as satisfying and delicious as home-grown food straight from your very own resilient, biodiverse and beautiful garden.

The Light House Garden team design landscapes that build soil, increase biodiversity and provide habitat. We use permaculture principles to create gardens that are both climate resilient and highly productive.

We design permaculture systems that focus on food production.

We design native gardens to attract wildlife and create habitat.

Together these approaches ensure resilience — so important in our changing climate.

We love designing a mixture of these two approaches that best suits your family and your site.

What is Permaculture?

A design science that focuses on creating productive gardens that have the resilience of natural ecosystems. A permaculture approach always works with nature rather than against it. Permaculture systems focus on resilience and aim to create stability that inevitably leads to less dependence on external resources.

Suburban Permaculture

  • Permaculture has traditionally been practiced on large areas of land, however, it is most productive per square meter on a smaller scale

  • Suburban permaculture can create a closed loop system of food production and waste management for people living in urban areas

  • It is a holistic design method that encompasses house and garden design to perform in a way that manages resources and replenishes them

  • Rainwater is harvested to passively to feed your food crops through the use of swales

  • Companion planting of trees and perennials is used to mimic natural processes and create micro ‘food forests’

  • Tailored planting for the specific climate and site increases biodiversity and improves soil health

What does a resilient, native-permaculture garden look like?

It can chaotically mimick a forest, or, it can have order and definition. This is up to you, it depends on what you want your garden to feel like and how much time you want to spend on maintenance. Regardless, it will be abundant and thrive.

How much maintenance is required?

This depends on the complexity of the system designed. Maintenance needs are tailored to how much time you wish to spend managing your garden and how many people it will serve.

Some permaculture systems can be very low maintenance through good design and understanding of the local climate.

Often, systems will take some work to establish but, once there, will require very little upkeep whilst continuing to produce food, build soil and provide habitat.

What is involved in the Light House Garden design process?

After an initial meeting, we will plan out a concept design to suit your brief, budget and site. If you are happy with the concept design for your garden, we can continue the design process to create a detailed planting schedule. This involves carefully selecting each species based on your site and how you want to use your garden.

The concept design includes four key documents

-        Zone Map

-        Indicative site planting plan

-        Solar diagram

-        Passive water harvesting, structures & access plan
